The aim of this study is to investigate athletic identity, self-esteem and physical self-perceptions in Flemish athletes with a disability, to investigate the mutual relationships between those variables, and to evaluate their stability over time. Flemish athletes (Paralympic level, n = 23; Non-Paralympic Elite level, n = 37) filled out questionnaires 11 months before the Paralympic Games (PG), 3 months before the PG, and immediately afterwards. Participants in both groups report strong levels of athletic identity, comparable to profiles in able-bodied sportive individuals. Similar findings are reported for global self-esteem and physical self-perceptions....

Brett Smith
European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 1, 23-34 (2008) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2008.002
Based on life history data, this qualitative article explores the self-perceptions of a small group of men who, due to a spinal cord injury (SCI) through playing rugby union football, have made a transition from the world of the able-bodied into the world of disability where they remain to this day. The most common kinds of perceptions of self used by the men through telling their stories as they live post-SCI is focused upon in detail. The narrative analyses reveal that three types of narratives help structure and shape the ways in which these men storied their embodied perceptions of self. For the majority of the participants, the restitution narrative...

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 1, 35-49 (2008) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2008.003
The purposes of this study were threefold. The second aim was to assess the relationship between variables such as length of sport career, frequency of doing sport and competitive level, and Self-perceptions in the physical domain as well as Global Self-esteem both in athletes with and without disability. The third aim was to assess the relationship between disability-specific variables such...

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 1, 51-61 (2008) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2008.004
The study of self-perceptions in groups with disability is an emergent area of research in Portugal and additional evidence is needed concerning Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance of young students with Down Syndrome (DS). The main purpose of this research was to examine the reliability of a Portuguese version of the Dutch Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance (Vermeer & Veenhof, 1997) to be used in children with and without DS. A second purpose was to assess hypothetical differences in Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance among young male and female students with and without DS. Two groups were analysed including...
