Kendall Jarrett, Serge Eloi, Stephen Harvey

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 7, 6-20 (2014) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2014.001

This paper presents a small scale research project that focused on pre-service physical education (PE)teachers' and sports coaches' considerations of using Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) to teachgames. A research design akin to action research was adopted whereby pre-service PE teachers and sportscoaches (n = 72) completed a one-off 90 minute introduction to wheelchair rugby league utilising a TGfUapproach. Data were generated through end of session whole-class reflections, semi-structured individualinterviews undertaken (n = 3), and post session first-author/primary practitioner reflections. Data analysiswas conducted via inductive coding...

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 7, 22-30 (2014) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2014.002

Previous studies show that people with intellectual disability (ID) appear to have impaired postural stability,a lower level of physical activity, and lower aerobic capacity compared to persons without ID, limitationsthat could affect their health. This study investigates these physical functions and their associations in agroup of young people with ID compared to an age-matched group without ID. In total, this cross-sectionalstudy included 106 high school students (16-20 years): 57 students with mild to moderate ID and 49 agematchedstudents without ID (control group). Tests were performed for postural stability, level of physicalactivity, and aerobic...

MULTIPLICITY AND DEVELOPMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN GERMAN ELITE ATHLETES WITH AND WITHOUT A DISABILITY

Astrid Kämpfe, Oliver Höner, Klaus Willimczik

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 7, 32-48 (2014) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2014.003

While achievement motivation influences success in elite sports, the empirical knowledge on its manifoldaspects and its development is quite rudimentary, especially in disability sports. This study analyzesmotivation of athletes with a disability (N=73) as opposed to athletes without a disability (N=156). Wesurveyed these German elite athletes (N=229) in a 2x3 design retrospectively, regarding various facets ofachievement motivation during three career phases (initiation, development and mastery). Results showedthat enjoying the sport and improving one's personal performance level have great relevance for athleteswith a disability, whereas incentives...

STATIC BALANCE OF PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES, VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND WITHOUT DISABILITIES

Aija Klavina, Ilze Jekabsone

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 7, 50-57 (2014) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2014.004

This study aimed to compare static balance of students with severe intellectual disabilities (SID), visualimpairment (VI) and non-disabled (ND) persons 18-24 years of age. Eleven students with VI, nine with SIDand eleven ND students performed the One-Leg Stance balance test (10s). The Digital Balance Analyzer(DBA) platform was used to measure the Balance Index (range from 0 "excellent balance" to 10 "very poorbalance"). Subjects performed tests in open and closed eyes conditions. On right leg with open eyes resultsindicated statistically significant differences between both groups of students with disabilities and nondisabledstudents (p < .05),...

Kwok Ng, Pauli Rintala, Jorma Tynjälä, Jari Villberg, Lasse Kannas

European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity 7, 58-72 (2014) | DOI: 10.5507/euj.2014.005

Physical activity (PA) of adolescents with long term illnesses or disabilities (LTID) in general education is examined to provide evidence of PA levels from specific population groups. This study describes the PA levels of adolescents with LTID based on recommendations of daily 60mins of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and vigorous leisure time PA (VPA) of at least two times a week for at least one hour per week. Finnish data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study was pooled from 2002 and 2010 surveys. 1126 respondents (14.6%) self-reported as having a LTID and details of main categories of LTID were used to examine PA behaviours....
